Same Same But Different – Hair Colour FAQs

What To Ask Your Stylist About Hair Colouring

We all love a good natter here at Same Same But Different Salon and there's one topic we really love talking about.  And that's hair!  Hair trends, hairstyles, hair colours, hair techniques.  You name it, we have an opinion about it.

We also recognise it can be a bit daunting sometimes for clients who are new to hair colouring or hair smoothing or just want a bit more info about our salon and team.  Please do ask us questions - we are open, honest, friendly and here to help you.

In this blog, we've decided to answer some of your key questions about hair colouring.  We understand it can be tricky explaining exactly which colour you want, so read on to find out more about what to ask your stylist when having a hair colour appointment.

Which Hair Colour Will Suit Me?

Your first step is to book a complimentary hair colour consultation.  One of our Stylists will chat to you about your hair and take into consideration your likes, your hair type and condition, and even your skin tone and eye colour - to help you find a colour that will look sensational on you.

How Do I Explain The Hair Colour I Want?

Show us some photos of the hair colours you like.  If you're unsure, then take advantage of our complimentary consultation which lasts between 15-30 minutes.  Together we will work out which colour would look fabulous on you.

What's A Patch Test & Why Do I Need It?

You may have heard it called a patch test, a skin test or an Allergy Alert Test.  Basically, we dab a little spot of hair colour to the inside of your elbow to test to see if you have any sensitivity to the product.  Reactions to hair dye are rare but they can happen for a variety of reasons including medication changes, illness or hormonal imbalances.  We are a Colour Responsible Salon so we may require you have an Allergy Alert Test around 48 hours before your hair colour appointment. Having said that,  it is also worth noting that we work with a great range of hair colours which use natural ingredients and are free from ammonia - so it is unlikely you will suffer any reaction.

Should I Have My Hair Cut Before Or After My Hair Colour?

We usually recommend having your hair coloured before your hair cut.

Can I Go From Brunette To Blonde?

Achieving the perfect blonde colour takes skill, knowledge and confidence, which our stylists have in bucketloads here at Same Same But Different Hairdressers in Windsor, Victoria.  We have a vast knowledge of the science of hair colour and colour placement and we’ll always maintain the health and integrity of your hair.

What’s The Difference Between Balayage & Highlights?

Many clients ask us what is the difference between balayage and highlights?  These are two completely different techniques and they give very different results.  Balayage is a freehand technique where we blend and paint vertical sections of colour throughout your hair, usually leaving the roots darker than the ends.  With highlights, we carefully select strands of hair which are coloured and placed inbetween foils to allow the colour to develop.  Highlights can be placed more uniformly across your hair, with colour added in strands from root to tip.

How Much Will My Hair Colour Appointment Cost?

The cost of your hair colour will depend on the level of stylist and which colouring technique you choose.  As a guide, view our price list here but please book in for a consultation so we can give you a precise quote as all colour prices are based on 6 weeks' regrowth unless stated otherwise.

Do You Offer Pastel Hair Colours?

We are experienced in creating all hair colours including vivid shades, pastel hair colours, and the classics (blondes, brunettes, redheads).  We can even create blocks of hidden colour that are only revealed when you put your hair up or swish your locks!
